What are the underlines for?

If you go to Microsoft Word or any Microsoft program, there are underlines under certain letters in certain words. What are those for?! For example, under the word, "paragraph", the "P" is underlined. Or the letter, "F" is underlined under the word, "file". What are those underlines mean?
